RE: x-15 liner shims
I don't think the X15 has a short or long block option, only drop-in new or reman. Our pricing in Canada sits around 72k. Risks with Reman is if its in spec it will usually be assembled so when talking liner protrusions, etc. they may not be 100%.

When doing X15 in-frames, with costs of the kit going up so much the PRO and Elite Kits have become more affordable. The PRO kit sits about 1500-2500cnd more then head and in-frame kit and you get water pump, oil pump, and fuel pump (entire assembly on the X15, short block and plunger assemblies on the ISX). Elite is the same thing with injectors and rods at an addition average of 10k cnd.

Additionally the blocks changed in 2022 so all reman engine (ISX/X15) within the last four year may have the new block (all part compatible except crank thrust bearings).

From a shop point of view to a customer, in-frame vs drop in, the drop in will cost 20-40k more depending on amount of additional items needing attention (cam, structure leaks, balancer, rod reconditioning, etc.). The largest benefit is time, an engine swap is roughly 4 days vs 7-14 for proper in-frame. A drop in will out perform a sloppy in-frame, a proper in-frame with due care and attention will always be a better product then a reman engine. The most common repeat issue I see is costs or corners cut with non-OE components or silly mistakes when rushing or pinching pennies coming back to bite within 6-18 months. Any partial or customer supplied non-OE component that we install is done under clear point that they are to expect a failure within a year, any time over that is pure bonus and when it happens they get to deal with whatever warranty it comes with. In our area there is a lot of aftermarket nonsense that is done at a wild mark up but it keeps out the door totals below their OE builds. The shops walk away with huge profit and can absorb warranty failures as needed and still turn significant profit so at the end of the day anything they have to warranty doesn't matter.

The guys here that have ran trucks and had to fix trucks for years and years are the best source of info and what money is required to be spent. Get informed and push back on shops, ask questions, have them show you what and why, if they are trying to sell you something or saying something that doesn't add up don't take it as gospel.

Back to cylinder heads and reman chat, the biggest argument for a non OE head is always "but its and new casting". Cummins OE head are reman 90% of the time but brand new heads are available, they may not be in stock.
EI:
5658302RXCUM this part number is a reman head

5658302NXCUM
5658302PXCUM these are both brand new heads

You may have to argue with the parts people but the letter does change the part and there is a difference. For cylinder heads the new ones will be about $800cnd more then reman and will not have a core.

The letter changes work on all parts when available. Anyone with a dual cam ISX has probably noticed a drop in life expectancy of injectors, same rule applies. Change the RX in the part number to NX or PX and you'll get a brand new one (these are ruinously expensive injectors).
