CM554 QSC 8.3 ECM Reflash issue

Hi all,

On a QSC 8.3 CAPS CM554 from 2003, I purchased a new ECM without Calibration, planning to do the calibration myself (as I was able to with Calterm 3.17 on the original one).

When trying to download the original cummins calibration, it throws an error "DCLDevice Write Failed. DCL Status = 27. The remote node could not validate the restricted access node."

When going into the Calterm 3 Unlock Menu, I can see that the ECM came in with Calibration Security "Secured" unlike the original one (and in RomBoot, normal, Module Status 5EED). Using the button "Switch" next to the Calibration Security, it is not doing anything.

Trying with Calterm 5.16 on another PC, when trying to reflash it tells me "Module is secure. Download to secured modules is not supported by Calterm".

Do you have any advice how I can manage to unlock this ECM and get my Calibration in ?

In Calterm 3, select Tools from the top menu, then click Unlock. This will open the Calterm Unlock utility.

Click Datalink and verify that the communication settings are correct. Once verified, return to the Unlock window and click Find Devices. The tool should detect 0x00 (hex) / 0 (decimal), which is typically Engine #1.

Next, click Display Current Status. Under Calibration Security, the ECM should report Locked. If it does, click Switch. This sends a special command over the datalink that instructs the ECM to enter Unlock Mode.

After the ECM has been unlocked, try flashing the calibration again.

If the flash still fails, troubleshooting becomes more difficult. Older ECMs can be extremely finicky about which E2M file is used during the flash process. In that case, there is a good chance you are using the wrong E2M file for the ECM.

an FYI for next time...

Buy from a certified stealers%it, cummins directly.. YOU GET A BRAND NEW CIRCUIT BOARD INSIDE IT!. They can manufacture that board for far less moneys than it would be to hire some team of people to sit and solder on them + troubleshoot. - ALL they re-use in a reman ECM is the casing and frame inside it.. and slap a whole new board in them. That is why all of the the connectors (that are part of the board and not the casing) on the front if it is always brand spanking new as well.

AND YES... ALWAYS pay them extra to flash it fully. All ready to go for your truck so that you can just drive away. This is really cheap insurance against having to buy a second one if there is anything wrong with it out of the box. AS with any electronics, .. THEY WILL NOT TAKE IT BACK IF YOU CLAIM ITS DEAD OR HAVE ISSUES WITH IT NOT WORKING, ETC!.

It needs to be flashed by them (usually costs a couple hundred bucks extra) and then simply installed and then the engine run for 10+ minutes BEFORE doing anything else to it (like any custom programming, etc) if need be. This grantees that they cannot tell you that you caused it not to run.. and verifies that it is ok before you go fiddling with it.

Thanks and this is what I tried (and retried), but when clicking the Switch button, it does nothing and goes back to before clicking on "Display Current Status" (showing "NONE" in all the fields). Communication with ECM works as the "Display Current Status is well reading the ECM data and Serial Number.

Could this be because the ECM is in RomBoot ? But as I need to unlock the Security to be able to download the Calibration to ECM and get out of RomBoot, what other ways can I try ?

As the ECM is in seed status (Insite message), trying to transfer the first calibration via Insite looked the only way from what I read, and it made some progress. But just after the start of the Calibration Transfer, into the "Preparing ECM to receive calibration", it stops at 70% with Calibration Download failed message, and no more details. I tried with several different .ENI files for this engine downloaded from insite, same result.
I have a Nexiq 3 clone which so far worked well (able to use most of Insite features and upload/download calibration with Calterm), so I am wondering if it may be it impacting the transfer (checked latest drivers and tested connexion all OK, removed all auto detect features too...not better).

I saw someone a few years back go thru about 4 or 5 ecm's before realizing they just kept purchasing junk parts that were no good...

for all anyone knows, you have another bad ecm?.

GO get a replacement ecm from the stealers$it and have it pre-flashed by them ready to run the truck before leaving. - Read my post above.

Not truck related but story from four years ago when there was volvo s40 2008 year that had abs fault - pump motor circuit malfunction c 0110. Fuses and supply woltages checked out all good. I was like okay, 99.9% the abs unit is faulty on those. Car owner got another abs module - that looked opened up and RTV d together, inside there was really really bad soldering and some capacitor added, but still plugged it in, there was no comms. So the customer brought another module, same pump fault.

Then I pulled the cover from wiring junction box - one latch was not completely installed, also there were visible signs that somebody had probed the wires and done measurements. There was no water damage visible to cabin. Then I asked a friend to check car history and previous software reloads (you need to match abs to car by volvo online tool or just edit abs serial number manually in immobilizer module), and then there it was just two days before the car was sold to next owner there had been abs module replacement registered.

After that I told the customer that 99.99% there have been now total of THREE faulty modules besides the original one that was on car. Costumer ordered used abs module control unit from Sweden, that one did work and fix the problem.

flashing anything cummins thats Pre - GTIS 4... (pre 2006-07) can be a major PITA!!!

highly recommend and agree with rawze on this... have the dealer flash it to stock and avoid any issues. i've bricked a few CM870/CM5xx ECMs myself.
