Dealer Alternator - 3406E - 05-15-2026

Bought alternator at the international dealer and the lower regulator stud came out. While I was putting it on I noticed it wasn’t stable, like have play side to side but didn’t think much of it. I think it was a returned product they sold me because the box was in rough shape and taped up. Of course they didn’t take it back because as you know no returns on electrical parts. I saw my voltage gauge went up 15.5 volts when idling immediately shut truck off and went to check the post, I didn’t a little tug on it and accidentally yanked it out, shows how bad it was. It’s brand new too not rebuilt. I’m thinking of finding a shop that rebuilds alternators and starters to pull it apart and solder it back in place. Good idea or nah?

looks to me like it got hot and burnt... = no good.

Yep, maybe the play in the stud was causing steady arcing while charging? The erratic loads could've freaked out the voltage regulator.

I would imagine a decent rebuild shop could knock that out and have back in working condition for you.

The burn is actually from when I yanked the stud and it grounded on the alternator.

I switched from a Delco like yours to a Prestolite Leece Neville brushless "Idle Pro X" or "Idle Pro Extreme". It's quieter and it adjusts output based on demand/draw, so when I run things like my microwave or coffee pod brewer the voltage remains steady, even at idle. Comparable is price to Delco brushless for similar amps.
