2016 DD13 GHG17 Cascadia - DPF filter longevity
Hey guys! Been lurking here for the longest time, barely posted. Figured i would change that, so i would make a thread to share with others that might be curious about this matter in particular. I hear, read and see lot's of differnt info across the board when it comes to the longevity of the DPF filters and the onebox. Well.... i have invoices and maintenance records to back my statement's up, since the truck was purchased up to now.....

2016 cascadia, with the specs mentioned on the topic title and just got the DPF filters changed as a precautionary measure at 836k miles. They were still OEM. Got cleaned at the dealer at around 630k miles in October 2022, the first time around. The mechanic said that they had a few soot spots, but nothing crazy and they would last more if i wanted.

I never idle overnight. Shut if off after 5 minutes whenever possible. Always warm up in the morning until the oil reaches 60 degress celsius then i drive. I use full synthetic 10w30 valvoline premium blue. Doesn't burn oil... oh! and since 2022... i never got the DPF filters cleaned. According to my OTR performance tool, the pressure differential on the DPF and temps were all normal while driving, but i started having interment MIL light flare ups. So i got the wiring harness for the aftertreatment changed as well. First time it got changed was in 2019.

Saying my prayers and got my fingers crossed, to see how much the onebox will last but i am hopefull that she will never quit on me! :D

Whats your take on this?

How much idling time morning warmup takes?

What are your dpf differential pressure readings on idle? How big difference there was with the old DPF? Are regens more infrequent now ?

Intermittent MIL was caused by what faults codes? Maybe you have those for reference?

don't forget to do EGR tune-up work to the engine and EGR system on it at least once a year too.

I was going to say I didn't know on idle, but One of the last code reports I took was actually at idle. The other one, a couple days earlier shows a snapshot as I was rolling on the highway. I haven't checked with the new filters. Did my first drive today. Fuel mileage felt slightly better, but not much and too soon to tell. Route and weight was the same.

The code I had the most Was for the nox outlet sensor. Showed on the screenshot. The vehicle speed turned out to be the sensor by the transmission. Fortunately. Attached go oil samples. Note that there's one where the sample is high on wear metals. That's when I switched to Mobil Delvac from Valvoline premium blue (both 10w30) but the Mobil not being full synthetic and it Was a big mistake. Switched back to Valvoline premium blue and did rolling bearings just to be safe.

In the morning I low idle until oil reaches 35 Celsius and after that high idle till it reaches 60 degrees Celsius. All that talk about idling to warm up, I call BS. Stats speak for themselves.

Hey Rawze,

Thank you for commenting and for showing that link! I actually read your whole guide which I found very interesting. Learned a bunch as 2yo owner op. But, wouldn't this apply to or more to, the cummins engines? Because I had the egr cooler, crossover pipe and intake/turbo inspected a couple of months ago and they all looked clean.

Wouldn't the sensors throw codes? Also.. I never idle my truck.... Not even 300 hours in 10 years.. .for 836k miles and 21900 engine hours...

How long oil change intervals?

There are many people here using cheap quality brand mineral oil without any issues regaring mineral oil being dirty or any visible pressurized lubrication parts wear.

How engine looks after running one million miles with mineral engine oil with proper oil change intervals:

There has been gear oil added to engine oil too:

Every 40.000km. I could go more, according to freightliner, but I prefer to follow the severe duty cycle. I do OTR/regional. Midwest/east coast.

This is the oil I use. Couldn't vouch for this oil enough! I am going to look at those videos, but I am presuming you guys will agree that mineral oil on these newer engines is a no go?
