cpl 4342 cm2350 HP change lower - Flatwrench - Yesterday Hello, First thank you for the invite to the forums. I appreciate being able to post and ask questions. I have x15 efficiency series cm2350 with 500hp and 1650ftlbs file flashed stock. Mountain hauling and i25 at 75mph. Daily to denver and back home over the mountains. 9% grade. Engine made it to 10k hours 570k miles before taking number 6# ring....It was with optional range with no overheating logging but was towards higher end. I blame myself for not making it out fleet rotation and cleaning fins of the radiator. Maybe we could have prevented it. All liners look like this except for number 6 with scoring. We run more 450st and they are tanks....like 23k hrs and 600k miles with no blowby or very minor.....Champs. Almost 1mpg better fuel mileage on same run. Even the 565hp at 600k are holding well on no byblow. Efficiency 500hp doesn't seem to be great match at this elevation from 10,000 to 5,000. Question: Is it possible to turn the 4342 cpl down to 475 or 450? What are your guys thought on the liners? It was a new driver to us that drove this truck for last year. It was full throttle or nothing. Appreciate any thoughts. Engine has been rebuilt with Guideline on the forums with new radiator also. Just want to keep this purring best at possible like rest of the isx's in the fleet. Thank you . RE: cpl 4342 cm2350 HP change lower - Rawze - Today one problem I see is that oil is absolutely nasty. If it broke a ring, its because it got sharp as razorblade due to all the soot packing. == what is the fuel mielage, and what is the oil change interval?. -- is there a bypass oil filter installed to keep the soot out of it?. 2 things to think about to prevent the same failure in the future. RE: cpl 4342 cm2350 HP change lower - mikkhh - Today 75mph mountain hauling, full throttle or nothing. Considering how it was used it lasted quite well. The overhaul is done now with all OE parts? Liner heights are raised like they should to ensure longevity? In what RPM range this engine spent most of its life? How worn were other rings? Easy and fast check is to feeler gauge and fit ring in liner to see if there is any huge wear. What actually happened? Had lots of blow by? Just oil consumption issues? What oil grade was used? Expensive fully synthetic 5w30? RE: cpl 4342 cm2350 HP change lower - Flatwrench - Today It was on 10k oil changes with 15w40 puramax north american for it's life before it broke the ring. No oil consumption problem on this engine ever. Note: All 5 engines were sooted on the top end. During overhead adjustments. We have since switched to a 75syn/25con 15w40 maxtron DEO. Up to 12k miles. Now engine are clean as a cat c15 with 12k oil changes....super clean. hindsight. We also up our game on fuel additive. Using schaeffers ND2000:1. We live in the soot, we don't demandate. We also have propane fleet bobtail that stop, go, and pto pump. I've learned this keeps us from have stationary regens. It's difference for us removing head on 20k hr isl and one looking like moon crater of carbon and one brand new. I wish we knew this sooner. Colorado elevation is challenge We can see the difference. As a mechanic i'm not out there every other week having to run stationary regen, nor bake and blows. Pure hindsight after using this stuff. It would have saved me so much heart ache. ISXs x15s 450hp are about 5.8mpg winter blend(we bought used with 100k miles and 10khrs...now have 600k and 23k hrs.) 500hp are 5.5mpg 565 are 5.1 and 5.9 respectively(one guy drives it like a company truck and other drives it like it's his baby) 1)Ring: they were wearing i would say worn. 2nd ring was only 50% sealing on face to liner. I don't have a great explanation. 2)Rebuild: Yes OEM classic kit, with cummins recon rods, and cummins new head. Liners set to .014" with .020 repair shim. 3) in febuary we got code high pressure......changed sensor because it was a sudden spike and change lifetimec crank vent box....went from 4.0 at idle to 1.5 at idle, under a load under 10hg...It was weird it because i seen loss on 6 cylinder when cutting it. However after leak down test all even, it was inconclusive to me. I put it back together on the injector. Then it was gone. I had no drop on number 6 and good crank pressure. Okay sent it out for 8 month and throw a code high crankcase pressure and number blow the ring for sure. Very confirmable on diag. Question: 570k on 500hp efficiency series engine and 10k-12k hrs...not bad? Division manager was all sad..but i didn't think it was awful but i wished for better. RE: cpl 4342 cm2350 HP change lower - marek4792 - Today Maybe unrelated, but something to watch for on the X15's that's always overlooked is the air compressor intake plumbing. Very easy to take out a good running engine because an oring is letting unfiltered air through and not even know it until you get a code for crankcase pressure. Recommended to put a layer of silicone on the orings or to remove it completely and run a separate filter for the compressor. |
